Withers & Ravenel helped clients develop a “Brownfields” property in Sanford, North Carolina that was undeveloped for 30 years due to concerns about environmental impacts from a municipal wastewater treatment plant formerly located there. The firm conducted a groundwater assessment for contaminants and prepared the Brownfields agreement according to state standards. The site is now occupied by commercial and residential facilities. This was first brownfields site developed in both Sanford and Lee County, included in less than 100 brownfields sites developed statewide since the program was started. The project shows smart growth is possible by avoiding development of “greenfields” properties.
