Hi Heather! Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m going to be a junior at Virginia Tech this fall. I’m a midfielder on their women’s soccer team, and I’m a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. I also play alto saxophone in the campus band. Cary is my hometown.
What made you decide to pursue engineering?
My interest in engineering stemmed from two members of my church, and I’ve met different people along the way who have showed me different aspects of the field.
What drew you to WithersRavenel for your internship?
I met Brock Storrusten and Austin Hamilton at a career fair and enjoyed talking to them. WithersRavenel was the only company that mentioned core values—that connected with me, because it shows that the company cares.
What do you like most about WithersRavenel?
The people. There’s a friendly atmosphere here.
What has been your favorite project at WithersRavenel?
Learning how to grade.
What have you gained from working at WithersRavenel?
I feel more prepared for next year’s classes. Technical classes start then, and I know now that I’ll be able to understand the comments. I also feel like my confidence has grown.
What advice do you have for prospective WithersRavenel candidates?
Get to know the people you are working with. Learn a lot from the people you are around, learn what challenges they faced. Ask as many questions as possible. Realize that you will get there.
After you graduate from Virginia Tech, what are your plans?
I want to take a couple of months off to travel disconnect and recharge before jumping into work.
Heather, we are so glad you have chosen to spend your summer with us exploring the many facets of engineering! We hope you take this experience and carry it with you as you continue on your journey.
