Hi Michael! What drew you to WithersRavenel for your internship?
I met Brock Storrusten and Austin Hamilton at a Virginia Tech career fair in 2016. I was looking for firms near my family, which had recently relocated from New Jersey to North Carolina, and WithersRavenel fit that bill.
What do you like most about WithersRavenel?
The people here are a lot of fun to work with and have created a positive, collaborative work environment.
What has been your favorite project at WithersRavenel?
Pleasant Park in Apex, NC, because I got to design a couple of baseball fields that replicated minor league parks in the area. As a baseball player growing up and currently playing for the WithersRavenel softball team, this was a great project for me.
What have you gained from working at WithersRavenel?
WithersRavenel has helped me build off what I’ve learned in my college course work by allowing me to do real projects while still training.
What advice would you give to prospective WithersRavenel candidates?
Get to know people outside of your teams, and don’t be afraid to ask questions—people here are more than willing to help!
And what’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
My parents have raised me to consider that it’s not just what gets accomplished, but how it gets accomplished. Getting something completed as a unified/cohesive team, rather than creating a stressful/negative work environment.
After you graduate from Virginia Tech, what are your plans?
Travel around Europe for a few weeks after graduation, then come back to WithersRavenel for my full-time position.
Outside of landing a job before senior year—an impressive accomplishment!—what personal achievement are you most proud of?
Virginia Tech’s Land Development Design team was invited to present our project in front of 40 companies at an annual conference.
Now for something fun: what is one topic that you could give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?
Hockey for sure. I’m a huge Pittsburgh Penguins fan and I love playing the game. I could talk about the rules and the Penguins’ back-to-back Stanley Cups.
Michael, we are so glad you have chosen to spend your summer with us exploring the many facets of engineering! We hope you take this experience and carry it with you as you continue on your journey.
