WithersRavenel is seeking a Director of Parks and Recreation in our downtown Raleigh design studio. Our Design+Planning studio is a highly collaborative environment with in house experts in planning, urban design, landscape architecture, engineering, environmental, stormwater, and more. We facilitate projects ranging from large scale master planning to small urban plazas and parks. We have a holistic approach with projects from concept visualization through construction—concepts to concrete. The Parks & Recreation (P&R) Director has the primary responsibility for providing inspired technical and managerial leadership and expertise to both internal Company associates and external Clients and to grow our already established local P&R practice. The breadth of client services shall include parks and greenways, comprehensive planning, master planning, feasibility studies, maintenance and operations review, and public engagement.

Duties & Responsibilities

Sector and Practice Leadership

  • Responsible and accountable for the systematic and consistent operations, management, supervision, administration, planning, budgeting, and operational and financial performance of the P&R Sector
  • Creation and execution of the P&R Strategic and Business Plans in conjunction with our overall Department and Company Plans
  • Responsible and accountable for the creation, implementation, coordination, and enforcement of all technical aspects and policies of the P&R Sector
  • Lead quality control/quality assurance development and implementation consistent with Company and Department standards and the requirements of our clients and regulatory agencies

Project, Client, and Team Management

  • Provide technical expertise on projects, and engage in design as necessary
  • Promotion of the Company’s practice in the P&R field to associates both internally and externally
  • Monitor and report the financial performance of all Team projects and proactively address changes in scope, billing processes, schedules, and any settlements
  • Responsible for quality management for designs, construction plans, bid documents, technical specifications, cost estimates, and other deliverables
  • Provide direction to and mentorship to resolve scope, design, and other challenges ensuring adherence to standards, QA/QC processes, and other policies related to project execution and management

Personnel and Team Leadership

  • Recruit, lead, supervise, and monitor Team Members to achieve Sector goals and strategies
  • Lead, develop, and implement effective communication, performance management, and strategies needed to achieve Company, Department, Sector, Team, and project goals
  • Foster a positive environment; lead and engage in Company, Department, Sector, and Team meetings routinely, team building efforts, and community involvement

Client and Business Development

  • Develop, Implement, and Monitor Business Development Plan for Sector
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and participate in existing strategic client development and relationship processes for the Sector, Department, and Team including client feedback and building client relationships
  • Lead in strategic pursuit of potential clients per Sector and Department initiatives and our core values including organizing and participation in conferences/networking events and performing presentations

Qualifications

Required qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s in Planning, Landscape Architecture or equivalent degree/experience
  • Professional Landscape Architect or other professional registration
  • 10+ years of P&R project experience; 5+ years of managing teams
  • Large scale public and private park project experience
  • Enthusiasm for the Sector and strong willingness to promote and share knowledge
  • Self-motivated, engaged, team-oriented, communicative, and strategic thinker with strong leadership and management skills
  • Federal, State, and/or non-profit grant experience
  • Project and client planning and public engagement experience
