N.C. Main Street conference puts downtowns in the spotlight

New Bern will be the site for a three-day conference celebrating downtown development in North Carolina.

The North Carolina Main Street Conference will be March 10-12. Hundreds of elected officials, government staffers and economic development professionals will attend. Highlights include networking, educational sessions and speakers exploring topics vital to downtowns.

The theme of the annual conference is Main Street Math: In 40 years, $3.2 billion invested has led to the creation of 27,000 jobs in North Carolina downtown districts through the Main Street program. New Bern is one of the original Main Street programs, and has achieved great success through its downtown initiatives.

Tuesday’s keynote speaker is Donovan Rypkema, principal of PlaceEconomics and president of Place Strategies International. He’ll speak on “The Behind-the-Scenes Impact of the N.C. Main Street Program.”

On Wednesday, Ilana Preuss will speak on “Small-Scale Manufacturing and Main Street.” Preuss is founder of Recast City, a consulting firm that works with civic leaders and developers to integrate manufacturing space for smaller producers into redevelopment projects.
