Wilmington International Airport continues to grow, and WithersRavenel is playing a role in the changes on-site.
A $60 million project currently underway will upgrade and expand ILM’s existing terminal, allowing the airport to accommodate even more travelers after a record-setting 2018. WithersRavenel Senior Environmental Scientist Troy Beasley provided the environmental services in support of the terminal expansion. Beasley’s work included the wetland delineation, threatened and endangered species evaluation, and coordination with state and federal agencies. He assisted Talbert & Bright, Inc. in preparation of the NEPA documentation required for the approval and funding by the Federal Aviation Administration. Beasley’s environmental work was instrumental in the approval of the expansion project.
The first phase of the project, which involved reconfiguring the baggage area to make space for upcoming work, is expected to be complete by the end of March. The contract was recently awarded for the second phase, beginning in April, which expands the airport’s ticket lobby and provides new ticket offices. The third and final phase of the project is expected to be finished in 2022.
ILM is an economic engine for North Carolina and specifically the Wilmington area. A recent report from the state Department of Transportation notes that the airport contributes an economic impact of $1.8 billion.
