Todd St. John on Ductile Iron Pipe Corrosion

Ductile iron pipe corrosion typically occurs along the top of the pipe where oxygen is present, but CCTV imagery reveals that corrosion below the spring line can also be a reality. What are the sewer shed and pipe placement characteristics that cause this corrosion to occur? Can design decisions be made to provide for a more sustainable situation? Todd St. John, PE will explore approaches for avoiding these situations and various options for rehabilitating corroded pipes. He will draw on personal experience, the feedback of experts from various public utilities in North Carolina, and the recommendations of ductile iron pipe manufacturers to provide guidance on both prevention and treatment of corrosion.

Todd St. John, PE is a Senior Project Manager with a background in environmental regulation, natural resource assessment and restoration, and stormwater treatment. The intersection of this experience with his current work in water and wastewater planning and design results in context-sensitive and sustainable utilities infrastructure.
