Time flies when you’re doing work you love with people you trust and admire in beautiful, friendly, and award-winning communities.
Forty years ago, company founders Tony Withers and Sam Ravenel committed to providing engineering services to land developers, planners, and landscape architects transforming Cary into the ideal community for people working in the Triangle.
But it was only a matter of time before their vision would take them far beyond these humble beginnings.

Since then, the company has expanded into public sector as well as private work, weathered the 2008 financial crisis, grown to more than 415 employees, and cultivated expertise in Land & Site Development, Design + Planning, Water & Sewer Utilities, Environmental, Geomatics (including Survey, Remote Sensing, SUE and GIS), Stormwater, Funding & Finance, Asset Management, and Economic Development.
Our growth in employees and services over the years is complemented by our statewide office expansion. Today, WithersRavenel has additional locations in Asheville, Charlotte, Greensboro, Pittsboro, Raleigh, Southern Pines, and Wilmington. Our regional offices allow us to better serve our many local government clients while also providing support to land development projects and other services that we provide for private entities.
WithersRavenel has become a 100% employee-owned ESOP guided by 6 core values—Integrity, Respect, Collaboration, Quality, Sustainability, and Community—and 26 fundamental behaviors that define our unique culture.
We’re proud to offer flexible/hybrid working options, military and veteran benefits, and professional development support to our employee-owners. Students looking to start off on the right foot in their engineering careers should look no further than our summer internship program.
With all of those accomplishments under our belt, it can be hard to imagine what exactly the next 40 years might hold. We have our eye on becoming a Southeast regional firm focused on innovation and recognized for our exceptional client & employee experiences. We also continue to expand our presence in the asset management and lifecycle modeling arena through both technology and tailoring our services to clients. But who knows what other serendipitous opportunities might come our way?
What we know for sure is that we have had the privilege of building many professional and personal relationships with clients, partners, employees, and communities over the years—far too many to list by name. Thanks for being by our side all these years, and we hope you’ll stick around for the next decade of adventures and beyond.
