WithersRavenel congratulates Daniel Whatley, PLA, on his promotion to Director of Design for the Design + Planning team.
Daniel, who got his start as a landscape contractor and then transitioned into a landscape designer role, managed the design-build department for a local company for 10 years prior to joining the WithersRavenel team five years ago. He has since focused on landscape architecture with an abiding passion for sustainable design and horticulture.
As the Director of Design, Daniel will focus on the key aspects of design that translate into better deliverables for clients. He will help elevate the quality of WithersRavenel’s designs from early concepts and master planning all the way through construction drawings. The role is also largely internally focused on mentorship and elevating the entire practice area’s expertise.
“I am excited … It’s a great honor. I tell my teammates I consider it a fancy title for a not-so-fancy guy, but the point is that I am passionate about design and all things design; especially being considerate of designing for the human scale,” Daniel said. “My background is in horticultural science and landscape construction and management, and so I’m also very passionate about all things related to horticulture and how those can be applied to landscape architecture in the form of urban ecology, which incorporates life into the built environment.”
Daniel has a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticultural Science from North Carolina State University. He is a licensed Professional Landscape Architect, in addition to being a certified irrigation designer and a North Carolina-certified plant professional.
When he is not at work, he enjoys traveling with his wife, son, and daughter. Their adventures have taken them across Europe and North Carolina. But the big destination on Daniel’s list is visiting Spain, Portugal, and other parts of Europe. Both his children are in a Spanish immersion program in their elementary school, and he hopes Spain will be an even more exciting experience with their language skills.
