Hockey has arrived in Apex!
The Town has opened two street hockey rinks at Apex Community Park to feed the Triangle’s growing love for all things hockey. The project was developed as part of a partnership between the Town and the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes. A grand opening party took place March 29 and included food trucks, action on the rinks, and current and former Canes players.
The two 160-by-75-foot street hockey rinks include aluminum boards, penalty boxes, scoreboards, and fencing. Youth and adult programming are in the works and are expected to include beginner programs, leagues, clinics, and pick-up time.
Shane Willis, former Hurricane and the team’s current Director of Youth Hockey & Community Outreach, spoke at the event. The team touted the new rinks and the kickoff ceremony at its home game on March 30 against the New York Islanders.
WithersRavenel provided design and construction administration services to help bring this project to life. Our scope of work included landscape architecture, civil engineering, permitting, and bidding assistance for the street hockey rinks. The area includes an outdoor plaza, accessibility improvements, and accommodations for future site lighting and a future shelter.
The ultimate goal of this trailblazing project is to grow the sport of hockey and encourage youth participation. We were thrilled to work with the Town and the Canes on this new amenity for the region. Be sure to check out the new rinks at Apex Community Park!
