On September 30th, WithersRavenel’s Alisha Goldstein (Assistant Project Manager, Stormwater) and David Perry (Senior Project Manager, Stormwater) will present on stormwater planning at the 2025 Stormwater Conference, hosted by the American Public Works Association North Carolina Chapter (APWA-NC) in Asheville. Their presentation, “Hurricanes and Partnerships, a Stormwater Planning Study,” examines how a stormwater planning effort in Spruce Pine, NC, was forced to adapt in the wake of Hurricane Helene in September 2024.
Funded by the Local Assistance for Stormwater Infrastructure Investments (LASII) Program, the study originally relied on survey data collected just weeks before the storm. When the hurricane devastated local infrastructure, Goldstein and Perry helped the Town re-evaluate unreliable data, set new priorities, and address staffing changes. This was done while ensuring critical community needs were met. Their session will provide strategies for how to adapt, evaluate, and revise stormwater studies after natural disasters, offering insights valuable to communities across North Carolina and beyond.
