“Why didn’t I get this funded? It was a great capital project!”
Currently, many states find themselves amid budget conversations, and the question above stands out year after year. In a recent webinar, WithersRavenel Funding & Asset Management Project Manager, Megan Powell, and Brightly Strategic Solutions Consultant Luke Anderson delved into the intricacies of budgeting for local governments. The duo’s discussion centered on strategies for effectively achieving plans and goals while maintaining community stability.
As noted by Megan in the webinar, clear communication is paramount, both internally among departments and externally with elected officials and stakeholders. “If you can’t tell them what you need and why you need it, you’re not going to get that funding,” she stated.
While effective communication provides a solution to many problems, it must be complemented by robust data and performance metrics to drive change and project completion or advancement. To achieve this, local governments should look to the integration of key performance indicators such as facility usage rates, staffing workloads, and asset condition ratings to substantiate budget requests.
