Clark Townhomes is an award-winning infill development located on the Western edge of Raleigh’s Village District near the NC State Campus and downtown.
WithersRavenel was the primary site designer for Clark Townhomes in Raleigh. Our services included landscape architecture, civil engineering, geomatics, and environmental assessments.
Clark Townhomes promotes urban living in a growing and thriving city and helps to set the tone for future developments with its unique design aesthetic. This project received the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Community Appearance in 2020 for its modern design and architecture, which set it apart from the status quo of the current Raleigh real estate market.
WithersRavenel placed the buildings in proximity to the street, creating a human-scale streetscape with wide sidewalks and large maturing street trees. This placement allowed for a rear alley with access to a basement-level garage, taking advantage of the natural topography and obscuring the vehicles from sight.
The streetscape along Clark Avenue was further enhanced—through coordination with the City’s Urban Forestry department—by designing large rectangular planters for the street trees instead of small tree grates.
This modification from the standard street tree design allowed for more water infiltration, root capacity, and ground plane plantings. This additional landscape within the streetscape helps to soften the overall façade of the modern architecture.
Additionally, the townhomes include valuable outdoor space in the form of private forecourts, which allow natural lighting into the finished basement levels. WithersRavenel’s team of landscape architects provided custom planting designs for these forecourts to create lush green spaces for the residents, which were each unique per dwelling unit.
