From humble beginnings as a crossroads and then as a railroad station, Knightdale has become one of the fastest growing areas in the Research Triangle since the last census. To serve the growing population, Preston Development envisioned a 300-acre community with a mix of townhomes and single-family homes. The first of three building phases is complete and features a 25-acre park, athletic fields, a dog park, and walking trails; the second phase is underway and features open-air structures and an amphitheater. An onsite YMCA Aquatics Center opened in July 2015 and Thales Academy K-5 elementary school is set to open in 2016.
WithersRavenel supported the development with a stormwater management plan that addresses flood control as well as water quality. Because of the size and phasing of the development and the number and variety of amenities, the stormwater facilities needed to be large enough to accommodate future development without compromising the site layout. WithersRavenel coordinated with other utility providers to use the property efficiently and incorporate the stormwater SCMs into the site layout successfully.
