In early 2015, the Town of Apex purchased approximately 92 acres of land near the intersection of I-540 and Old US Highway 1 with the goal of creating a new park. The current Town Parks and Recreation Master Plan identified the need for a new athletic complex in this area of town. Challenges for the project include vehicular access and railroad crossing coordination.
Following multiple staff interviews, council interviews, and a public design charette in the Apex Community Center, WithersRavenel began development of multiple park concepts for consideration. It was evident in the feedback received that this park was to be designed to serve both the current and future Town programming, but also become a destination for tournament play in baseball, softball, lacrosse, and soccer. The proposed concepts took into account the size, topographic features, access, and infrastructure needs of the planned facilities, while also adhering to the principles outlined in the Town’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Master Plan.
After two public meetings to present design options, a final schematic design was prepared and preliminary cost estimate completed. Facilities proposed are six multi-use athletic fields for soccer and lacrosse, four baseball fields, six tennis courts, basketball courts, beach volleyball, splash pad, playgrounds, shelters, a large open play lawn, and a cross country running course.
In addition to amazing sports fields, the Enchanted Forest will bring a new level of themed play to a 1.3-acre amenity area full of creative wonders. Inspired by beloved fairy tales, fables, and popular folklore, this inclusive play space will spark imagination and joy in kids of all ages and all abilities.
WithersRavenel is currently completing design development for Pleasant Park, which will most likely be funded by a Town bond referendum. We look forward to unveiling Pleasant Park with the Town at the ribbon-cutting in late 2023.
