WithersRavenel recently completed a Parks, Trails, & Open Space Master Plan for the Town of Summerfield that will serve as a guide for delivering future recreation opportunities to town residents over the next 12 years.
The plan identifies both expansion and enhancement of current park facilities as well as locations for future trails, parks, and the preservation of open space, which is highly valued and important to the Town’s character and identity.
Future trails and other pedestrian/bicycle connectivity recommendations connect parks and neighborhoods to regional trails including the A&T Greenway, Mountains-to-Sea Trail, Piedmont Greenway, and other destinations. The importance of connectivity was expressed clearly by Town residents through surveys, as were enhancements to existing parks and the importance of preserving open space.
Level of Service evaluations and comparisons to National Recreation and Parks Association standards also influenced recommended park amenities and the location of future parks. However, most influential to plan’s vision was the community needs assessment which made clear the needs and aspirations of community members.
The vision illustrated by the master plan is consistent with the other Town planning documents, including the 2010 Summerfield Comprehensive Plan, regional planning documents, greenway feasibility studies, and the Bandera Farms Park Master Plan.
The master plan also identifies priorities, probable construction costs and funding strategies to guide the Town with the implementation of plan recommendations.
WithersRavenel was honored to facilitate the preparation of the Parks, Trails, & Open Space Master Plan for the Town. We look forward to seeing the plan’s recommendations implemented and the continued development of what is already a quality parks, trails, and open space system.
