Paying Attention to the Plants
The uses of multispectral imaging range from determining whether native or invasive species are present on a parcel and making recommendations for vegetation management to monitoring tree health and gauging the effectiveness of herbicidal spraying.
Improvements in sensor technology have increased the accuracy and degree of detail of multispectral imaging; advancements in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) equipment have made multispectral imaging affordable while manned flights remain cost-prohibitive.
Examples of service offerings include:
- Vegetation Management. Multispectral imaging can identify vegetation characteristics for an area, and the usage opportunities are varied. For example, we can design utility construction around existing vegetation and allow for minimal impact on existing critical root zones when applicable.
- Timber Health Monitoring. WithersRavenel has remote sensing technicians who are registered foresters. Combining these skills allows us to use both UAS data and technology along with foundational forestry knowledge and kills to evaluate the health of timber stands.
- Mitigation Banks. The development, restoration, or preservation of a wetland or stream can sometimes be used as a mitigation bank to compensate for ecological loss. WithersRavenel’s remote sensing technicians and environmental scientists have experience with this mechanism.
In addition, WithersRavenel can create high-resolution geo-referenced 3D surface models and digital mosaics of thousands of images to assist in decision-making and record-keeping.
