WithersRavenel welcomes Derek Slocum as our newest Business Development Representative. Derek will focus on our public sector clients throughout the Piedmont.
Derek possesses a range of experience working in both the public and private sectors in central North Carolina. His most recent local government stop was as the Public Works Director for the City of Statesville. Prior to that, he was the Town Engineer in Harrisburg. His municipal career began about the time that Lowe’s Home Improvement decided to purchase and build a corporate campus in Mooresville. Derek was on staff with Mooresville at that time as a Civil Engineer, and managed much of the infrastructure that was installed to accommodate the move by Lowe’s.
In addition to more than 20 years as a civil servant, Derek most recently managed business development at a firm specializing in delivering environmental monitoring solutions for municipal governments across North America.
His deep knowledge of local government procurement, operations, funding mechanisms, project management, and capital improvement projects will benefit our public sector clients looking for an experienced consultant. Derek also has an extensive background in providing clients with stormwater and sustainability-based solutions. Combined with his commitment to communication and client experience, Derek is ready to collaborate with local government leaders and staff on challenging problems.
“I have learned in my time as a local government representative that in most situations it comes down to maintenance, managing expectations, and readiness,” Derek said.
Derek has a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Construction Management from Penn State University. He is a member of the American Public Works Association and the Stormwater Association of North Carolina. Derek has been happily married to his wife, Sarah, for more than 20 years. They enjoy parenting their three teenagers. Derek loves to travel with his family and create memories, and also enjoys outdoor activities such as trout fishing and deer hunting.
