Turning Data Into a Strategic Asset
Data is one of the most valuable assets engineering firms possess today. As artificial intelligence tools become more integrated into everyday workflows, firms across the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry are exploring how their data can improve efficiency, support decision-making, and drive innovation. At the same time, the rise of AI raises important questions about governance, security, and responsible data management.
Insights from the Engineering Influence Podcast
These topics were the focus of a recent episode of ACEC’s Engineering Influence podcast. Leading the discussion are Brock Storrusten, Chief Strategy Officer at WithersRavenel, and Dennis Boone, President of slashBlue. Together, they explore how engineering firms can move from simply talking about artificial intelligence to actively implementing it within their organizations.
During the conversation, Brock emphasized that the industry must begin transitioning from awareness to real adoption. While many firms are experimenting with AI tools and large language models, integrating those tools into daily workflows is the next critical step.
“We have to get away from awareness and get to implementation,” Brock explained. Otherwise, it’s going to pass us by.”
Dennis reinforced the importance of pairing innovation with strong governance. Before firms begin integrating internal data into AI platforms, organizations should establish clear policies outlining what tools are approved, what data can be used, and how sensitive information should be protected.
Building on the Conversation at ACEC Fall Conference
This conversation comes on the heels of Brock and Dennis presenting at the 2025 ACEC Fall Conference in San Diego, where they led the session “Making Data Great…with a Little Help from AI.” Their presentation explored how firms can unlock the value of their data while establishing safeguards to protect client and organizational information.
Together, the podcast and conference session reinforce a central theme: AI presents a tremendous opportunity for the engineering profession, but success will depend on thoughtful implementation and responsible data practices.
