O.T. Sloan Park: A Playground for All
O.T. Sloan Park is bringing inclusive play to children and families in Lee County. The county’s newest playground celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in late March, welcoming the community to an accessible, thoughtfully designed space.
Inclusive Features
Built with inclusivity at its core, the playground features wheelchair-friendly ramps, sensory-friendly equipment, and inclusive swings, ensuring that children of all abilities can play together.
Funding for the park was made possible through the Accessibility for Parks (AFP) Grant, awarded to Lee County Parks & Recreation in 2023. This state-funded grant program enhances recreational accessibility for children and veterans with disabilities across North Carolina.
WithersRavenel led the design and development of the park’s accessibility improvements. Under the guidance of Landscape Architect and Senior Project Manager Jon Blasco, PLA, ASLA, the project introduced a fully accessible playground pad, ADA-compliant parking and walkways, a pedestrian plaza, and additional enhancements to create a welcoming environment for all visitors. Barrs Recreation provided playground equipment, and Sanford Contractors performed site work.
”It’s always rewarding working with trusted partners on a project that has such a big impact on the community and one that stays true to our core values of providing public spaces for all to enjoy and participate in.”
