Infrastructure is at a critical juncture. Many assets are nearing the end of their useful life or are increasingly vulnerable to natural disasters and severe weather events. This reality forces many communities to grapple with a pivotal question: “When should I repair or replace my asset—and how do I fund that project?”
In a recent webinar, WithersRavenel Asset Management Project Manager Casey Dolan, PE, tackled these pressing concerns in her presentation, Asset Management: Bringing Communities Into Focus. Dolan, a seasoned expert in water and sewer conveyance and treatment, emphasized the importance of asset management, the development of an Asset Management Plan (AMP), and its successful implementation. Her presentation also spotlighted two real-world applications of North Carolina’s Asset Inventory and Assessment (AIA) program in the Towns of Pilot Mountain and Liberty.
Dolan outlined where each town began—assessing the current condition of their water and sewer infrastructure—and detailed the practical strategies she and WithersRavenel recommended based on their findings. She employed a step-by-step approach to share actionable insights, demonstrating how other communities can apply these lessons to enhance their own utilities systems.
Through these case studies, Dolan offered valuable guidance on how asset management can help municipalities prioritize projects, optimize resources, and ultimately create more resilient and sustainable infrastructure systems.
