Planning an event that draws 50,000+ fans per day is more than just a challenge—it’s a monumental undertaking that requires precise record-keeping and the adaptability to come up with on-the-fly solutions to operational hurdles. For the 2014 U.S. Open Championship, played June 12—15 at the No. 2 Course of the Pinehurst Resort, the U.S. Golf Association (USGA) depended on WithersRavenel to provide onsite surveying and GIS services as the foundation of their event planning.
WithersRavenel performed topographic surveys of several specific areas of the course, then provided construction staking for the corporate tent village and other temporary event structures and layouts for parking and crowd-controlling boundary fences. Combined, these items created a general event layout designed to ease the flow of vehicle and pedestrian traffic, creating a more pleasant experience for guests as they circulated throughout the event space.
WithersRavenel continues to provide GIS mapping, conversion, and data management services as well as training for USGA Operations staff in support of planning efforts for future U.S. Open events.
