Brian Starkey joins WithersRavenel as Director of Parks and Recreation
From North Carolina to the Netherlands, WithersRavenel’s new parks and recreation leader has a bounty of experience that will benefit our clients and projects. Brian Starkey, PLA, ASLA, will be leading our Parks and Recreation studio based in our Downtown Raleigh office. With Senior Design and Planning Director Gary Warner, PLA, ASLA, our parks and recreation team will continue to improve under principled leadership focused on collaborative design, communication, client relationships and project management.
For 24 years, Brian led his own landscape architecture design firm, serving both private and public clients focusing on parks, civic and public spaces as well as campus planning. Additionally, he has worked in design and leadership roles for private engineering and architecture companies. For three years, Brian worked and studied in the Netherlands. During his time there he studied urban spaces and parks. This experience continues to inform and influence his design solutions.
Currently, Brian is a trustee for the American Society of Landscape Architects, representing the North Carolina chapter. He also serves on the Raleigh Environmental Advisory Board and has contributed to Raleigh commissions centered on aesthetics and design. Brian has a Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Architecture from West Virginia University. He also studied at the Amsterdam Academy of Building Arts in the Netherlands.
Recently, one of his public space projects received an award for transformational spaces from the American Planning Association’s N.C. chapter. Library Story Park, completed for New Hanover County, transformed an existing open space in downtown Wilmington, creating a multi-dimensional space based on CPTED, universal accessibility and sustainable stormwater management principles in addition to serving county library programs and general public use.
