Jeff Wing on a Successful Cambodian Biosand Filter
Over the past five years, a small team of engineers have volunteered with TransformAsia to assist Cambodians with their developmental and operational needs. One of the projects the team assisted with is a large biosand filter installed at one of TransformAsia’s orphanage projects in Anglon Veng District, the last holdout of the Khmer Rouge. This biosand filter eliminates the necessity of boiling water, providing water quality improvements while reducing the need for charcoal and the deforestation that results from charcoal production. Jeff Wing, PE, LEED AP shows how the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of a water system in Cambodia offers a lens through which to examine the technical and social challenges to water infrastructure improvements and how to successfully overcome them.
Jeff Wing, PE, LEED AP is the Director of Utilities at WithersRavenel and a leader in innovative water and sewer technologies. In addition to his experience providing detailed design, permitting, and quality assurance for utility infrastructure, he regularly presents on topics related to sustainable water and sewer design, trenchless technology, and utility rehabilitation.
