Today, October 14, WithersRavenel is celebrating our 42nd birthday. A lot has happened since our firm was founded in 1983 by Tony Withers and Sam Ravenel. Here’s a look at how we have grown and continued to evolve through the years:
Employee growth
While Tony and Sam were Employees No. 1 and 2, today we have more than 470 people employed by WithersRavenel. Additionally, these employees are owners of the company as well, as we have transformed into an Employee Stock Ownership Plan company, or ESOP.
Office expansion
From our beginnings in Cary, we have grown to have ten offices statewide: Asheville, Cary and Downtown Cary, Charlotte, Greensboro, Pittsboro, Powells Point, Raleigh, Southern Pines, and Wilmington. From these offices, we serve a range of local government and private clients across the state and throughout the country.
Service offerings
In the beginning, Sam and Tony provided engineering services to land developers, planners and local governments in the Triangle. Today, the services we provide have grown to include Design+Planning, Environmental, Funding and Finance, Infrastructure Asset Management, Surveying and Remote Sensing, SUE, GIS, Land and Site Development, Stormwater, and Water and Sewer utilities. We continue to embrace technology in all our practice areas, while being grounded in engineering fundamentals.

While always committed to delivering excellence to our clients, our firm has become more intentional about customer service. We have been recognized with numerous awards for our client experience program, and we continue to hone our skills while looking for new ways to improve the way we work every day.
The billion ways we support our state
At WithersRavenel, we continue to strive to improve communities across North Carolina, the places where our employees live, work, and play. One way is through our funding team: Our overall total of grant and loan funding earned by our municipal partners is $1.02 billion for more than 725 projects. From water to wastewater, parks to stormwater and more, we are helping communities improve critical infrastructure and craft better tomorrows.
